  15. <p>     DIED. EZRA TAFT BENSON, 94, President of the Church of Jesus
  16. Christ of Latter-day Saints; after a prolonged convalescence;
  17. in Salt Lake City, Utah. Benson was a controversial figure when
  18. he became head of the Mormon Church in 1985. Agriculture Secretary
  19. under Eisenhower, Benson was a John Birch Society sympathizer
  20. who once called the civil-rights movement "a communist program"
  21. and suggested it was not possible to be both a liberal and a
  22. good Mormon. But once in office, he focused on church matters;
  23. during his tenure, membership increased from 5.9 million to
  24. nearly 9 million.
