- <p> DIED. EZRA TAFT BENSON, 94, President of the Church of Jesus
- Christ of Latter-day Saints; after a prolonged convalescence;
- in Salt Lake City, Utah. Benson was a controversial figure when
- he became head of the Mormon Church in 1985. Agriculture Secretary
- under Eisenhower, Benson was a John Birch Society sympathizer
- who once called the civil-rights movement "a communist program"
- and suggested it was not possible to be both a liberal and a
- good Mormon. But once in office, he focused on church matters;
- during his tenure, membership increased from 5.9 million to
- nearly 9 million.
